iPhone safe-area insets by model: top and bottom, in points
In portrait, iPhones fall into five inset patterns: 20 pt top and no bottom inset on home-button phones; 44 / 34 on iPhone X, XS, XR and 11 Pro; 47, 48 or 50 / 34 on the notch models from iPhone 11 to 13 and on 16e; 59 / 34 on every Dynamic Island phone (14 Pro through 17 Pro Max); and 62 / 34 on iPhone Air. The table lists each model. Read the live values from `view.safeAreaInsets` or SwiftUI's safe area; use this page to know what to expect on devices you do not own.
Safe-area insets for every iPhone
Top inset covers the status bar and, where present, the notch or Dynamic Island; bottom inset is the home indicator (34 pt on all Face ID phones). Values are points, portrait, default Display Zoom.

The five patterns, and why they differ
20 / — is the classic status bar with a physical home button (iPhone 2G through 8 Plus, and every SE). 44 / 34 arrived with the notch and home indicator on iPhone X. The 11, 12 and 13 families vary between 47 and 50 pt because the notch height changed and Apple adjusted the status bar; iPhone 16e inherits 47 from the 14 panel it uses. Dynamic Island phones are a consistent 59 / 34, and iPhone Air's taller island region gives 62 / 34.
Landscape flips the problem: the notch or island moves to the side and the top inset drops to 0 while left and right insets grow; those values are not in this table. Pixel and point dimensions for each model are on iPhone screen sizes and resolutions.
Using insets in practice
- Pin content to the safe area, not the screen edge; let backgrounds extend under it.
- Keep tappable controls out of the bottom 34 pt so they do not fight the home-indicator gesture.
- Test at least one phone from each pattern above, or use the simulator's device list, which mirrors these values.
What this cannot do
- Values are the catalog bundled in Screen Specs; Apple's own tech specs and Human Interface Guidelines are the primary source and win if they ever disagree.
- Screen Specs is iPhone only (iOS 15 or later); this page is the web view of one part of its catalog.
- Portrait only; landscape insets differ and are not listed.
- Display Zoom, a visible in-call or recording status bar, and keyboard presence all change effective insets at runtime; the table is the default.
