Which device recorded my Apple Health steps (or heart rate)? How to check per reading

Tested with Health Stats: Data & Charts 1.0.1 · listing checked September 29, 2026 · iPhone, iOS 15 or later

Short answer

An iPhone in your pocket and an Apple Watch on your wrist both count steps, and any connected app can write to Health too. Health merges them using its source priority so totals are not double counted, but it does not make the origin of each number obvious. Health Stats shows the source for every reading — which watch, phone or app recorded it — next to the chart and in the Timeline, without changing anything in Health. Steps are free; most other metrics are in Pro.

Why the same day can have two step counts

Each device keeps its own count. Health de-duplicates overlapping samples by source priority (Health app → Profile → Devices, or a metric's Data Sources & Access screen), so the daily total is not simply the sum. A third-party app that writes steps adds a third source. When a total looks wrong, the question is almost always "which source produced this sample", and that is what Health Stats answers.

Seeing the source in Health Stats

Open a metric and the Sources panel lists the devices and apps that contributed to the current period. Switch to the Timeline tab for the sample-by-sample view: each reading with its time and origin, day by day, back as far as the data goes. Because the app is read-only, checking sources here never edits, deletes or re-prioritises anything in Health — to change priority you still use the Health app.

Same trick for heart rate and everything else

The Sources panel exists on every metric, which matters most where two devices genuinely disagree: heart rate from a Watch and a chest strap, weight from a smart scale and manual entries, or blood pressure from two cuffs. See viewing your heart rate history for the heart-rate side.

What this cannot do

  • It shows sources; it cannot change source priority, delete duplicate samples or merge devices. Those actions live in the Health app.
  • If a source did not label its samples, Health Stats can only show what Health recorded.
  • Steps are free; heart rate, weight, blood pressure and most other metrics are Pro.
  • iPhone only, iOS 15 or later; no Apple Watch app.

Questions people ask

Does Health Stats fix double-counted steps?

No. Health already reconciles overlapping sources by priority; Health Stats shows you which device or app produced each reading so you can adjust priority in Health if the wrong one is winning.
