Vocably is a CEFR English vocabulary app for iPhone built for daily use. All 8,500+ words carry a CEFR level from A1 to C2 and sit on one card with learner-friendly definitions and examples, plus IPA and audio for thousands of words, so ESL learners can study the level they need. The whole dictionary lives on the device, and five quiz types plus a word-of-the-day widget keep the habit going.

8,500+ words graded A1 to C2

Every word carries a CEFR level tag, so you can drill only B2 words before an exam or work up from A1 one level at a time. Progress is tracked per level.

IPA plus audio pronunciation

IPA phonetics and a speaker button on the card for thousands of words. Auto-pronounce reads words aloud as you swipe, and the audio is stored on the device.

Five quiz types

Definition Match, Example Fill-in-the-Blank, Listening Quiz, Reverse Definition and Context Match, in sets of 10, 15 or 20 questions.

Word of the day widget

A new word with its CEFR level and definition on your home screen every day, in small and medium widget sizes.

Which CEFR English vocabulary app covers every level from A1 to C2?

Vocably grades every one of its 8,500+ English words by CEFR level, from A1 beginner to C2 proficient, and prints the level on the card. A B1 learner can filter the deck to B1 and skip words that are either trivial or years away, while a C1 candidate can drill C1 words on their own. If you are still working out where you stand, the six bands are labeled Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper-int., Advanced and Proficient inside the app.

Progress is tracked per level. The List screen shows a progress ring and percentage for each of the six levels next to your Favorite, Known and Unknown counts, so you always know which band still needs work. You can also filter by status (known, still learning, favorite) or shuffle the whole deck when you want variety.

How to learn new English words every day on iPhone

Vocably is built around a short daily loop. Open the app and the next word card is already there: the word, its CEFR tag, IPA phonetics, a speaker button, then numbered definitions written for learners with an example sentence under each. Swipe up for the next word; swipe across to see the same word as a noun, verb or adjective, each form with its own definitions and examples. If you have used English flashcards before, the word cards work the same way, one word per card, minus the shuffling of paper.

Under the card, a Daily counter fills toward the goal you set. Buttons along the bottom let you favorite the word, mark it unknown or known, replay the audio, or open the built-in dictionary with one tap. A daily reminder fires at the time you choose, and auto-pronounce can read each word aloud as you scroll, so you hear every word without tapping the speaker button.

Word of the day widget for your iPhone home screen

Vocably ships a word-of-the-day widget in small and medium sizes. The medium widget shows the word, its CEFR level badge and the first line of its definition; the small one fits the word and a short definition. A new word appears every day without opening the app, so vocabulary keeps showing up between everything else you do on your phone.

The widget is the low-effort half of the habit. Pair it with the daily reminder and the daily word goal: glance at the widget during the day, open the app when the reminder lands, swipe through the goal, and mark what you already knew. Words you mark as known, still learning or favorite feed the counts on the List screen, so the widget and the cards build the same record.

English vocabulary quiz app with listening and fill-in-the-blank

Recognizing a word on a card is not the same as owning it, so Vocably includes five quiz formats. From the quiz screen you pick 10, 15 or 20 questions and one of the following modes:

The Listening Quiz uses the same on-device audio as the cards, so it works without a connection. Mixing formats matters for ESL learners: fill-in-the-blank and context questions test whether you can use a word in a sentence, not just recognize its definition, which is the skill exams and real conversations actually demand.

  • Definition Match: pick the correct definition for the word
  • Example Fill-in-the-Blank: complete the missing word in a sentence
  • Listening Quiz: hear the word, then choose the right one
  • Reverse Definition: find the word from its meaning
  • Context Match: choose the word that fits the sentence

Offline English vocabulary app with IPA pronunciation

Vocably stores the full dictionary and the pronunciation audio on your iPhone. The download is 107.1 MB, and the app works on a plane, on the subway or anywhere without a signal: cards, audio, quizzes and word search all run locally.

Word cards show IPA phonetics beside the speaker icon, with IPA and audio pronunciation available for thousands of the words. A one-tap dictionary lookup opens a sheet with the word's IPA, definitions and examples, and you can search the entire word list at any time. Honest limits: Vocably is iPhone-only, requires iOS 15.0 or later, is offered in English only, and lists in-app purchases; the App Store description does not say which features they unlock.

How it works

How to learn English words daily with Vocably

  1. Set a daily word goal and reminder

Choose how many new words you want per day and the time you want the daily reminder to arrive.

  2. Swipe up through word cards

Read the word, its CEFR level, IPA and definitions with examples. Tap the speaker or let auto-pronounce read each word aloud as you scroll.

  3. Swipe across for other word forms

See the same word as a noun, verb or adjective, each with its own definitions, and use the one-tap dictionary lookup when you need more.

  4. Mark each word

Tag the word as known, still learning or favorite so the List screen tracks your progress for each level from A1 to C2.

  5. Quiz yourself

Pick 10, 15 or 20 questions in Definition Match, Fill-in-the-Blank, Listening, Reverse Definition or Context Match to lock the words in.

  6. Add the word of the day widget

Place the small or medium Vocably widget on your home screen so a new word shows up every day without opening the app.

Made for

Who Vocably is for

Exam prep by CEFR level

Filter the deck to B2 or C1, test recall with five quiz formats and review offline. Graded by CEFR, not by exam.

ESL beginners (A1–A2)

Start at A1, set a small daily goal and let auto-pronounce read each word aloud while you read the simple definitions.

Advanced learners (C1–C2)

Drill the C1 or C2 list on its own, see every word form on one card and check the IPA before you say a word out loud.

Commuters and travelers

The dictionary and audio live on the phone, so a flight or a subway ride with no signal is still study time.

Word lovers

Shuffle all 8,500+ words, favorite the good ones and keep a word-of-the-day widget on the home screen.

FAQ

Vocably — frequently asked questions

Is Vocably a free English vocabulary app?

Vocably is free to download on the iPhone App Store and lists in-app purchases. Its App Store description covers word cards, five quizzes, progress tracking, the widget and offline use without marking any of them as paid, and it does not say what the premium purchase unlocks, so check the in-app purchase list on the store page before you buy.

How many words does Vocably have, and which CEFR levels does it cover?

Vocably contains 8,500+ English words, and every word is graded by CEFR level from A1 (beginner) through A2, B1, B2 and C1 to C2 (proficient). The level is printed on each word card, you can filter the deck by level, and the List screen shows a separate progress percentage for each of the six levels.

Does Vocably work offline without internet?

Yes. Vocably keeps the full dictionary and the pronunciation audio on the device, and the app is a 107.1 MB download. Word cards, audio, the five quiz types and word search all draw on that local data, so you can study on a flight or the subway with no connection at all.

Does Vocably have a word of the day widget for iPhone?

Yes. Vocably includes a word-of-the-day home screen widget in small and medium sizes. The medium widget shows the word, its CEFR level badge and the start of its definition; the small widget shows the word and a short definition. A new word appears every day, so you can learn from the home screen without opening the app.

What quiz types does Vocably have?

Vocably has five quiz types: Definition Match (pick the correct definition), Example Fill-in-the-Blank (complete the missing word), Listening Quiz (hear the word, then choose it), Reverse Definition (find the word from its meaning) and Context Match (choose the word that fits the sentence). Each quiz runs 10, 15 or 20 questions.

Is Vocably good for IELTS or TOEFL vocabulary?

Vocably organizes words by CEFR level rather than by exam, so there is no IELTS- or TOEFL-specific list. For exam prep, filter the deck to B2 or C1, use the fill-in-the-blank, context and listening quizzes to test recall, and study offline. The description says the app suits learners getting ready for an exam, but treat it as a level-graded word bank, not an exam course.

Is Vocably available on Android or iPad?

No. Vocably is an iPhone-only app: it requires iOS 15.0 or later, has no iPad-optimized layout and no Android version. The interface is in English only and the App Store age rating is 4+. If you study on an Android phone or want a tablet layout, Vocably will not cover that; it is built for the phone in your pocket.

Does Vocably show IPA pronunciation for English words?

Yes. Vocably word cards print the IPA phonetic transcription under the headword next to a speaker button, and IPA and audio pronunciation are available for thousands of the 8,500+ words. Auto-pronounce can read each word aloud as you scroll, and the built-in one-tap dictionary shows the IPA again alongside definitions and example sentences.
